About Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry
The Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry: A Century-Old Circuit Near Paris
The Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry, located in Essonne, a few kilometers from Paris, is one of the most mythical circuits in the world. Built in 1924 by industrialist Alexandre Lamblin, it has accumulated over 1,800 records in cars and motorcycles. Labeled a 20th-century Heritage Site by the Ministry of Culture, this historic circuit continues to host motorcycle track day events and track days on its 2.5 km road circuit, with an impressive elevation change of 51 meters.
History of the Autodrome de Montlhéry
In 1924, Alexandre Lamblin bought 650 hectares on the Saint-Eutrope plateau to create a "city of the automobile." Engineer Raymond Jamin designed the speed ring of 2.548 km with parabolic turns inclined at 52°. Inaugurated on October 4-5, 1924, the circuit immediately broke records (211 km/h on the first lap). A road circuit was added for the French Grand Prix in 1925 and 1927.
Between 1926 and 1965, the autodrome accumulated 1,800 world records, representing 86% of the records at its peak. The Bol d'Or was held there from 1937 to 1939. After the Second World War, the UTAC took over the management of the site in 1946-1947 for technical tests and approvals. The centenary in 2024 is celebrated with exhibitions and historical racing events.
Track Layout and Technical Characteristics
The road circuit used for track days measures 2.5 km with an elevation change of 51 meters, making it one of the most undulating circuits in France. The track, 10 meters wide, is paved and includes concave turns, fast curves, and modular chicanes. Two straights allow for good acceleration. The sound limit is 95 dB.
Riding Tips: The significant elevation change requires precise braking management when entering turns. Take advantage of the two straights to accelerate, but brake early before the chicanes. Favor smooth trajectories on this winding track. Watch out for bumps on some historical sections.
Access and Practical Information
The autodrome is located at Avenue Georges Boillot, 91310 Linas, in Essonne, in the immediate vicinity of Paris. Its location in Île-de-France makes it the most accessible circuit for Parisian motorcyclists.
