About Calafat
Motorcycle Track Day at Calafat Circuit
The Calafat Circuit, built in 1974 by Jordi Xiol for a cost of 30 million pesetas, is one of the oldest circuits in Spain. Located only 800 m from the sea in L'Ametlla de Mar (Tarragona), it saw the debut of legends such as Ángel Nieto and Sito Pons. Originally designed exclusively for motorcycles, it remains a very popular circuit for motorcycle track days. The track was extended in 1990 and resurfaced in 2008.
Track Characteristics
The circuit is 3.25 km long with 16 turns (9 right, 7 left) in a clockwise direction. The asphalt track is 10 m wide and is completely flat (0% elevation change). The straight is 600 m long. The sound limit is 102 dB.
The original 2,496 m circuit was extended to 3,250 m in 1990. It experienced closures in 1982 and 1985 for legal reasons, before being taken over by the municipality of L'Ametlla de Mar. The track has been approved by the Catalan Motorcycle Federation since 2012.
Riding Tips
Calafat is a technical and physical circuit despite the lack of elevation change. The 16 turns follow each other quickly over only 3.25 km, requiring a sustained pace and frequent changes of direction. The original motorcycle layout offers a natural flow for two-wheelers. The asphalt resurfaced in 2008 offers good grip. The proximity to the sea can create windy conditions — adapt your lines.
Access and Practical Information
The circuit is located in L'Ametlla de Mar (Tarragona), 1h45 from Barcelona via the AP-7 motorway. The paddock offers free camping. The circuit has pit boxes, a restaurant, but no gas station on site. The seaside setting makes it a pleasant destination combining a track day and vacation.
