About Gotland ring

Motorcycle Track Day at Gotland Ring

The Gotland Ring is a unique circuit in the world, built in a former limestone quarry on the island of Gotland in Sweden. With its 7.3 km and 41 turns, it is one of the longest circuits in Europe. Located in Kappelshamnsviken, about 50 km north of Visby, it offers a spectacular setting between limestone cliffs and Nordic landscapes. The Gotland Ring is recognized as the world's first sustainable motorsport circuit, operating on 100% renewable energy (wind and solar).

Track Characteristics

The 7.3 km circuit has 41 turns in a clockwise direction, with an elevation change of 30 m. It is divided into two distinct loops:

  • Nordslingan (north loop): 3.2 km with FIA-approved barriers — section used for official races
  • South loop: 4.1 km with innovative barriers made of residual limestone quarry material, offering natural acoustic damping

The motorcycle record is 1:39.71 on the full track. The car record is held by a Koenigsegg Jesko Attack in 2:56.97.

Riding Tips

With 41 turns over 7.3 km, the Gotland Ring is an extremely technical circuit that leaves no respite. The constant sequence of curves requires great consistency and a quick reading of the track. The natural terrain of the old quarry creates variations in grip and subtle changes in altitude that must be tamed lap after lap. The length of the circuit makes memorizing the track particularly difficult — several sessions are needed to feel comfortable there.

Access and Practical Information

The Gotland Ring is located on the island of Gotland, accessible from mainland Sweden:

  • By plane: Visby Airport offers direct flights from Stockholm (Arlanda, Bromma, Skavsta) and Ängelholm. In summer, flights from Hamburg and Helsinki (~1h30)
  • By ferry: Destination Gotland operates fast ferries with up to 10 daily departures in summer, crossing of ~3h with the possibility of boarding vehicles and trailers
  • On site: the circuit is about 50 km north of Visby by road

The circuit has fast charging stations (400 kW) and electric fuel. Motorcycle track days are organized under SVEMO sanctions with instruction by professional riders. Introductory sessions in master-lap are offered at the beginning of the day.

Circuit History

The Gotland Ring was built on the site of a former limestone quarry, giving the circuit its unique character. A pioneer in sustainability in motorsport, it runs entirely on renewable energy and hosted the first world championship of electric motorcycles. The circuit hosts various events: endurance races, sprints, time-attacks and rally-sprints.
