About Merignac

The Mérignac circuit: a circuit closed since 2022

The circuit de Mérignac, located near Bordeaux in Gironde, was a popular place for motorcycle track day and training for Bordeaux bikers. Created in 1991, it experienced several closures and reopenings before closing permanently in August 2022. The land, owned by the town hall of Mérignac, has been reallocated to other uses. This page retains historical information about the circuit.

History of the Mérignac circuit

The circuit de Mérignac was created in 1991 at the initiative of the municipality, on the site of Bordeaux-Mérignac airport. It closed for the first time at the end of 2004, then reopened on April 15, 2006 under the management of Piste SR, which organized driving and road safety courses there. After another closure in 2018, GTRS took over the site and hosted two French Drift championships there.

In January 2022, the town hall asked GTRS to vacate the site. Despite a petition of nearly 60,000 signatures and a demonstration of 2,000 bikers in April 2022, the circuit closed permanently in August 2022. The land is being redeveloped by the municipality. The circuit de Mérignac remains in the memory of Bordeaux bikers as a friendly place to practice track riding.

Track characteristics (historical)

The circuit de Mérignac measured 1.76 km with 9 turns and a 12 m wide asphalt track. The sound limit was 95 dB. The track, fast with successive sequences, offered a configuration with or without a chicane. The best known time was 45.48 s in Formula X Van Diemen.

Alternatives for riding near Bordeaux

Following the closure of the circuit de Mérignac, Bordeaux bikers can turn to other circuits in the region: the circuit de Haute-Saintonge (La Génétouze, 1h30), the circuit de Pau-Arnos (2h30) or the circuit du Val de Vienne au Vigeant (2h30). Check PlanTrackDay to find the next available track day events in the South-West.
