The Pau-Arnos circuit: an undulating track at the gateway to the Pyrenees

The Pau-Arnos circuit, located 20 km west of Pau in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is a technical and undulating 3.03 km track designed by riders for riders. Created in 1986 by Bernard Teulé and renovated in 2015, it offers a 55-meter elevation change, making it one of the most demanding circuits in France. FIA and FFM approved, it hosts international-level competitions, from the Championnat de France Superbike to the WTCR (World Touring Car Cup).

History of the Pau-Arnos circuit

Bernard Teulé, an entrepreneur from Béarn with a passion for motorsport, launched the project in the early 1980s with the support of the Lacq district authorities and former F1 driver Jean-Pierre Beltoise. The circuit opened in 1986, financed without public funds. The track was resurfaced in 2008, then underwent a major renovation in 2015-2016: new FIA-standard pits, complete resurfacing of the track. Bernard Teulé managed the circuit until his death in June 2023 at the age of 83.

Among the highlights, the circuit hosts the Championnat de France Superbike, the Championnat d'Espagne de vitesse moto, and in 2021 the WTCR, becoming the first FIA series to compete there. It also serves as a test site for teams before the Grand Prix de Pau.

Track and technical characteristics

The track of the Pau-Arnos circuit extends over 3.03 km with 13 turns (8 right, 5 left) and a 55-meter elevation change. The track, 10 meters wide, offers 5 configurations derived from 600 to 3,030 m. The main straight of 570 meters precedes the last turn, while the starting straight is 350 m.

The track is characterized by a blind uphill turn 1, followed by fast S-turns. The « Stadium » section (turns 8 to 12) is particularly winding, alternating tight left and right turns. An uphill left hairpin with a Laguna Seca-type chicane completes this demanding track.

Riding tips: The Pau-Arnos circuit requires particular attention in the blind uphill turns. Anticipate braking downhill, especially at turn 8. In the Stadium, maintain a constant speed and favor fluidity over attack. Turn 5 (blind) and hairpins 6-7 require good braking control and cornering support.

The circuit is located at 1 Camin deu Circuit, 64370 Arnos, 20 km west of Pau and 12 km from Pau-Pyrénées airport. Access via the A65 motorway, exit 9.1. The sound limit is 102 dB at 75% of maximum RPM.
